For makers

Selling repackaged open source

Packaging free skills into something a business can use is real work, and you can charge for it. These rules keep it fair to buyers and to the people who wrote the originals.

The rules

  1. Declare every source. In your listing, tick "This includes open-source work by others" and list each repository URL with its licence.
  2. Only permissive licences. Accepted: MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD-2-Clause, BSD-3-Clause, ISC, 0BSD, Unlicense, CC0-1.0 (CC0 for documentation). Refused: GPL, AGPL and LGPL (copyleft), PolyForm and other non-commercial licences, CC BY-NC, CC BY-SA, "all rights reserved", custom or unclear licences, and any repository with no licence file. A repository whose README asks people not to resell or redistribute it is refused even if its licence would allow it.
  3. Ship the original licence texts. Include every original LICENSE file (and Apache NOTICE files) in your package, plus a third-party notices file that lists which files came from where.
  4. Credit the authors. Name the original authors and link to their repositories in your package and your listing description.
  5. Say what you added. Describe your contribution in the listing: curation, setup, business instructions, testing, support, updates. If you changed an Apache 2.0 file, mark it as changed.
  6. No passing off. Do not imply the original authors made, endorse or support your listing.

What we check

  • The listing form refuses an open-source declaration without a source, an allowlisted licence for each source, the licence-texts and credit confirmations, and a description of what you added.
  • Every uploaded version is compared file by file against our index of popular open-source skill and agent repositories. Matches are flagged to an administrator, who checks them against your declaration before approval. Undeclared copies are rejected.
  • The usual security review still applies: malware, secrets, dependencies, prompt-injection rules and the install test.

Free listing plus a Pro version

You can list your open-source project for free and link a paid Pro or "set it up for me" listing from the same maker account. The free listing shows a "Pro version available" note and the Pro listing links back to the free edition. Set the link in the free listing's form under Open-source sources.

Tipping the original authors

We encourage a short "Tip the original authors" note with links to their GitHub Sponsors pages. AIOS Market Collections packs include one on every listing.
